Orchard Academy
Main information
Type of service: Day schools, Schools
The school is a 7 to 11 year junior school with two attached units, a communication disorders (CD) department and a physical disabilities department. Both are shared with one of the local first schools. The school caters for a wide range of socio-economic groups and most children attending the school are within the normal needs range. Children in the communications department are educated as part of the inclusive approach championed by Milton Keynes Council. The children follow the National Curriculum Literacy and Numeracy Strategy where the work is differentiated according to need. Occupational therapy is provided by the Local Education Authority (LEA) and health authority. The school encourages a team approach and co-operation and a positive behaviour strategy. Children who have English as a second language are supported by Ethnic Minority Achievement Support Service (EMASS). There are two speech therapists working in the department one of whom works in the secondary CD department at St Paul's and CD department at Stantonbury on the other two days. Teachers, support assistants and speech therapists work closely together in a very inclusive environment. The CD department caters for 10 children. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils if felt appropriate. The department runs across 2 schools - our feeder school, Shepherdswell, and Orchard thus catering for age ranges from foundation to year 6.
