PEAT Educational Inclusion for young people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Main information
Type of service: Interventions and therapies, Family support and information services
Service URL: http://www.peatni.org
PEAT (Parents Education as Autism Therapists) have been
awarded funding from the Big Lottery Fund as part of a province wide project
aimed at empowering children and young people who are at risk of educational
exclusion. Young people with autism can experience pressures from school life
that trigger behaviours that challenge teachers, peers and parents. Research
shows that young people with autism and other special educational needs (SEN)
currently face higher rates of educational exclusion and poorer educational
outcomes than their peers. PEAT is a Northern Ireland wide charity that uses
evidence based practice to understand and manage behaviour and to provide
effective intervention that improves the quality of life for individuals with
autism. PEAT's project is now up and running and they would like to hear from
parents of children with autism whose children are having behavioural
difficulties at school which results in them being left out of educational
activities or excluded from school. Behavioural difficulties that may result in
educational exclusion may include disruptive behaviours at school, anxieties
about attending school, bullying or difficulties that staff working at school
have with managing behaviours that challenge. The service will provide one to
one support and intervention for 3 hours per month for 6 months for each young
person along with their parent (s) and/or school staff and/or any other
professional involved with the young person over the course of 3 years. The
service accepts confirmed or suspected diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder
(ASD) and is aimed at children, young people and young adults.
