Type of service: Day schools, Nursery and pre-schools, Schools
The name of the class for children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the Perthcelyn ASD Class. An infant class of six pupils, with 1 teacher, 1 National Nursery Examination Board (NNEB) and 1 Learning Support Assistant (LSA), within a mainstream school. Children receive weekly speech therapy and have the benefit of a sensory room. The children are included in the mainstream for playtimes, mealtimes and whole school activities. Integration and reverse integration occur whenever of benefit to the children. Staff follow a child centred approach that uses picture exchange communication system (PECS) structure, play and consistency to provide a secure and stimulating environment. In addition we have some children diagnosed with ASD within a junior class for children with specific learning difficulties and within the mainstream. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils.
