The name of the unit for pupils with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is called the Communications Base. The unit is for students on the autism spectrum who are capable of integration into a mainstream secondary. The mainstream school has approximately 1000 pupils and the Base has 20 students. We offer a range of courses to supplement mainstream General Certificate in Secondary Education (GCSE) options including life skills, therapy and outward bound activities along with certified academic ones. Students are supported according to individual need. We provide ASDAN life skills and Outward Bound activities. The teacher-pupil ratio is 2:20 but also 13 Learning Assistants (LAs). We offer a week's residential trip in years 8-10. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils as long as they are police checked.
