The Specialist Resource Base (SRB) has spaces for 14 pupils with a statement for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Pupils are placed by the specialist placement panel run by the local authority. Pupils are supported to access mainstream classes with their peers where appropriate. When not in mainstream lessons pupils are educated in small groups in the base. Pupils are given provision before school and at break and lunch time. Groups are run to develop social and life skills. We also have several pupils in the mainstream school with high functioning autism and Asperger syndrome supported by the special needs department and Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO). Volunteers may not be accepted to work with the pupils. However we accept people on work experience from College if they have a new Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check certificate. Other interventions, approaches and programmes offered by the school are life skills groups and speech and language development, the latter delivered by SRB staff not a speech and language therapy.
