Type of service: Further & Higher Education, Respite and short breaks
Ruskin Mill College is one of three independent specialist further education colleges operated by Ruskin Mill Trust. Founded in 1987, the college provides practical skills and therapeutic education for young people aged 16 to 25 with complex learning and behavioural difficulties, many of who have autism spectrum conditions. Ruskin Mill College focuses on land and craft skills associated with the historical traditions of the Stroud valleys that have been made relevant to today - these include organic farming, animal husbandry, trout farming, horticulture, textiles, ceramics, art, storytelling and drama, artisan studios and a vegetarian coffee shop. The college aims to help young people develop practical, vocational, social and living skills through an experiential learning-based curriculum. This is integrated with its residential provision, over 38 to 52 weeks a year, that includes a diet rich in organic foods and provides a unique model of care that promotes healthy development with sports activities, medical and therapeutic support as appopriate to each student's needs. The college's individualised learning programme provides a range of accredited courses, with work experience and vocational opportunities within our own and other local businesses in order to increase self-esteem and develop functional skills, team-building, work competence, employability and independent living. This enables students to make tangible and recognised achievements and to progress to recognised qualifications whilst at college and through external providers. Throughout the year, the college celebrates festivals, cultural opportunities and a full arts programme. The student council engages in all aspects of college life and each student will be involved in their individual transition planning.
