Shepherds Down is a day school run by the Local Education Authority (LEA), catering for 110 pupils, aged 4 to 11 years. The children have a wide range of difficulties including profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), learning disabilities (LD) and autism and are supported by a well trained staff including teachers, special school assistants and special needs assistants. Speech and language therapy and occupational/physiotherapy are both provided by visiting professionals. This is supported by school staff. All pupils are statemented and have an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Pupils with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are educated in mixed groups and for the most severe in a smaller specialist intense group of up to 6 pupils and 3 adults. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils and all require Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks.
