Type of service: Nursery and pre-schools

Portage is a home visiting educational service for pre-school children with special educational needs. These may be pre-school children who have learning difficulties, delays in their development and/or physical difficulties. The Portage Teams aim to help families by working with them in their home, helping them to meet the needs of their child. The Service is organised into 4 teams: South Somerset, Mendip, Taunton and Somerset Coast. Each area has a team comprising of Portage Home Visitors, a Senior Portage Home Visitor and an Educational Psychologist who supervises the team. As part of Portage, we also provide Portage Early Response and Social Communication in the Early Years (PERSCEY). This is a visiting service for parents - as well as staff in Early Years (EY) settings - which can precede Portage and enables a quick response with a specific focus on the social communication needs of the child concerned.
