Southbrook is a successful special school for students with varied complex needs and broad ability range including moderate or severe learning difficulties, social emotional and behavioural difficulties and autism. Students may also have speech, language and communication difficulties, sensory impairments and/or physical disabilities. Pupils with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are grouped according to their level of need. Most are with their year group and attend lessons. Some pupils receive 1:1 support from a teaching assistant. Others are taught using the Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children (TEACCH) approach in a small group or within the school’s Complex Needs class. Other facilities provided by the school are quiet areas and rooms for therapeutic work. Other interventions, approaches and programmes provided by the school are SAIL (literacy intervention) and peer mentoring. Other extra curriculum activities provided by the school are an allotment, Taiko drumming and cross-city inclusion with partner schools.
