Southlands School, Hampshire
Main information
Type of service: Day schools, Residential schools, Schools
In 1995, Southlands School established itself as the first residential school in the United Kingdom (UK) for students with Asperger syndrome. Southlands offers a 38-week residential programme for boys. Admission can take place at any time during the school year and day provision is available for students living close to the school. Today, we continue to lead with innovative teaching methods, access to the full national curriculum and new Information Communication Technologies (ICT) in classrooms. Our most recent Ofsted report (November 2011) identified us as "outstanding". Southlands School is a part of the Cambian Group, one of the UK's leading providers of specialist services in education and care for young people with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Southlands draws upon a proven programme of specialist education, specialist 24-hour care and a wide range of clinical and therapeutic inputs, including speech & language therapy, behavioural therapy, occupational therapy, psychiatry and psychology. Multi-disciplinary teams and high staff ratios ensure intensive individual support. We offer extensive community-based programmes, vocational training and further education opportunities. Post-16 places are available at The Wing Centre. We do follow the Structure, Positive (approaches and expectations), Empathy, Low arousal, Links (SPELL) framework for students who will benefit from it. Residential respite services are just for their own pupils.
