The name of the units for people with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is A1 (Year 7 pupils), A2 (Year 8 and 9) and A3 (Years 10 to 14). The school now has 4 ASD specific classes, Key Stage 3 (KS3), KS4, KS5, and a mixed KS4/5 group for the most challenging students with very limited communication. These classes are staffed 4:4 or 4:5. Where possible Students with ASD are included in classes with their non-ASD peers for some or all of their school day. Pupils with an ASD follow the full range of curriculum subjects differentiated to individual need, with a strong focus on independent and life skills throughout the school. All staff are trained in picture exchange communication system (PECS) and makaton and the school is noted for its effectiveness in behaviour management. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. Residential and planned respite provision is just for their own pupils though special cases have and can be considered.
