This is an independent special school fully approved by Estyn and enabled to educate children with emotional and behavioural difficulties (EBD) and mild learning difficulties (MLD). Also we have experience of teaching children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who are taught as a special class as part of the unit. For children between the ages of seven and sixteen who are defined as being on the autism spectrum we provide a special classroom which is adequately equipped and where children follow individualised programmes to meet their needs. However the classroom is within the main body of the school so that children with ASD are included in whole school activities such as visits, outdoor education, ASDAN, work experience and physical education (PE) as appropriate. This is to ensure that other children become sensitised to the needs of ASD children and it also creates opportunities for social learning for special class children too. The children on the autism spectrum who have attended the school in the past have adjusted, developed and have been helped successfully to move onto appropriate post-sixteen placements. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils if they meet the appropriate police clearance criteria. Emergency and residential respite services are just for their own pupils.
