St Giles School is an all age school for children with a wide range of learning difficulties including autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and Behavioural, Emotional and Social Difficulties (BESD). The school is based in two new buildings, a school for pupils 3-16 years and a post 16 centre which is shared with two comprehensive schools and a college of Further Education (FE). There are 31 teachers including the Head Teacher, 44 Teaching Assistants (TAs) and 13 Care Assistants. Their work is supported by secretarial staff, midday supervisors and school nursing staff. In addition the school has support from a range of other partnership staff. Pupils are placed in class groups according to their chronological age. A marked distinction is made between primary, secondary and post 16 phases. There are three teams: primary, Key Stage Three (KS3) and 14 to 19. Primary pupils are taught for the majority of their lessons in class groups. We have a discrete unit which caters for a small number of severely autistic children who have challenging behaviour. Secondary aged pupils are based in mixed ability phase groups which divide into ability groups for the delivery of some curriculum areas. The use of ability based groupings increases according to age. All pupils are taught according to their individual needs and appropriate support is offered to meet their requirements. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. Another intervention offered by the school is Positive options.
