Communication Language and Autistic Spectrum Support's (CLASS's) mission is to enable pupils with social communication difficulties including autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) or with specific language impairments (SLI) to reach their maximum academic and social potential in an inclusive educational environment. CLASS provides outreach support and an inclusive resource base provision in the following at present: a) St Thomas More Secondary ASD Resource Base is a purpose built inclusive provision, part of St Thomas More RC College, providing ongoing education and support at secondary level, for pupils with ASD whose needs cannot be met in other mainstream schools; b) St John Fisher Resource Base is an inclusive provision supporting pupils with ASD whose level of need is greater than can be achieved within another mainstream setting. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. Volunteers will need to be police checked. The pupil with ASD-teacher ratio in the primary resource base is 1.4:12 and the secondary resource base is 1:12. 50 of the 80+ pupils in outreach have an ASD and all 24 in the resource base have ASD too. The majority probably have Asperger syndrome but if there is no clear diagnosis, they are defined as having "social communication difficulties". It caters for 2-16 years (outreach) and 5-16 years (resource bases).
