Type of service: Day schools, Residential schools, Schools

St Joseph’s Specialist School and College is a day and residential school for children and young people aged 5-19 years with a range of different strengths and needs, but in particular those with communication difficulties and complex challenging behaviours associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). St Joseph's was awarded the Autism Accreditation in 2009. The curriculum is personalised and differentiated to meet needs of all our learners. Learners throughout the school and college are taught in mixed groups which includes learners with ASD and those with other disabilities. St Joseph's has specialist schools status in communication and interaction and has a large purpose built therapies and development centre housing a team of therapists including speech and Language, occupational therapy, art and music psychotherapy. They ensure that all learners needs are met through individual, group and class sessions. The school is split into two distinct departments pre 14 (school) and post 14 (College). Learners in the college have the opportunity to take part in a weekly work experience programme. The residential accommodation is split into 6 distinct ‘family units’ and there are both weekly and termly boarding placements. We now also offer 52 week placements. We also specialise in the arts. Over 75% of learners are on the autism spectrum.
