Strathmore College is an independent specialist college for people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. It is situated in a residential suburb of Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire with close access to local amenities and public transport. The College provides for 18 day students and 32 residential students. All homes are registered, are inspected regularly and offer a homely and comfortable environment. The College aims to provide quality teaching and learning by devising Individual Learning Plans to empower students to achieve their agreed learning objectives.Teaching and learning is carried out within the individual's household, the locality and at dedicated off-site training facilities. The emphasis is on real living and working environments, in a real living community. The training programmes are geared to stimulate individuals to attain their potential through everyday life experiences, which include daily living skills, personal care and presentation, community and leisure activities and practical and vocational training. Achievement is accredited at various levels, internally through certification and awards for endeavour, application and progress, and externally through schemes for example, NVQs, the Essential Skills Award, and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. To provide realistic working environments Strathmore has two retail outlets and a catering facility where students receive supervised work experience and training in retail, floristry and catering skills to National Vocational Qualification level. The College may accept volunteers to work with service users.
