Strathmore School
Main information
Type of service: Day schools, Outreach - education, Schools
Staff, governors, parents and our multi-professional team strive to create a centre of excellence where pupils and students are welcomed, valued, helped and encouraged to achieve full independence and where there are equal opportunities for all. We have 7 class bases within school in mixed ability groupings and generally, although with some flexibility pupils' progress according to age throughout the school. The layout within each class reflects the age and individual pupil need. A bungalow provides a more adult environment in which students may extend their personal and social education and particularly their independence skills. This allows the opportunity for students to experience a 24 hour programme using overnight stay facilities. We liaise very closely with the multi-therapy team that includes speech and language, physio and occupational therapists. We recognise that children with autism have strengths that include visual skills, visual memory, precision and accuracy. The contribution of parents to children's programmes is invaluable and we work closely with parents to provide appropriate strategies for learning both at school and home. We have inclusive classes throughout the school with rooms set up with individual working areas for pupils. Following assessment of need pupils have access to music therapy. There is a drama teacher/therapist. Volunteers may work with the pupils. Angelman syndrome is also covered. External accreditation is Foundation Learning via NOCN.
