Surbiton Children's Centre Nursery is an inclusive nursery with 105 children on the roll. There are a number of children with a variety of additional needs in the mainstream classes. There are 4 places in the mainstream with extra support for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or social communication difficulties (SCD). Green Class is a specialist class for children with ASDs or SCDs. There are 6 children with an adult/child ratio of 1:2. Group and individual work takes place in Green Class but many play activities are provided outside and in the mainstream classrooms with their peers. Green Class is a specialist unit situated in the centre of a mainstream nursery school. It caters for children with significant speech, language and communication difficulties, many of whom have an autistic spectrum disorder. Class times run in line with the normal academic year and sessions run from 8.30 to 11.30 or 12.30 to 15.30. Inclusion into mainstream is available for the children as appropriate. Home visits and parent training workshops available. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. The Structure, Positive (approaches and expectations), Empathy, Low arousal, Links (SPELL) framework is used in their approach.
