Sutton Park Community Primary School
Main information
Type of service: Day schools, Schools
The Mainstream Autism Base aims to support the development of children with autism spectrum conditions (ASC) (who meet the entry criteria), by providing high quality specialist provision within a mainstream school. The philosophy is that each child should have every opportunity to play a full part in a mainstream school. Essential elements of the provision are: trained staff to help plan and support the pupil's time in support based on his/her individual needs; a higher staff to pupil ratio than typically found in mainstream settings; room to provide a safe haven away from the pressures of the mainstream environment and a base for individual and small group teaching; delivery of a specialist curriculum; access to specialist resources; and working in partnership with parents/carers to facilitate active input into their child's education. The ultimate aim is that the children will be able to thrive in their mainstream classes (with varying levels of support) as their social and communication skills, self-management, confidence, independence skills and abilities develop, enabling access to a full and varied curriculum.
