Swalcliffe Park School
Main information
Type of service: Residential schools, Schools
Swalcliffe Park is a non-maintained specialist school providing education and care for up to 57 secondary - age boys (11-19 years). All pupils have a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), mainly Asperger syndrome, and many have additional needs arising from associated diagnoses such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, dyspraxia and speech, language and communication difficulties. The school adopts a personalised learning approach for all pupils and gives special emphasis to four main areas, known to present challenges to pupils with ASD, namely: Communication; Independence; Self-management; and Achievement. These are known as our ‘4 Whys’ because they form the main reason why pupils, parents and Local Authorities choose Swalcliffe Park - to enable pupils to develop positive attitudes, extend their knowledge and acquire essential skills in each of these areas. Learning is facilitated by Teachers, Learning Support Assistants and Residential Care Staff who work collaboratively with a specialist team of therapists. This team includes experienced professionals from Speech and Language Therapy, Educational Psychology, Nursing, Psychiatry, Occupational Therapy, Counselling and Massage Therapy. The school also has strong links with local colleges, community based organisations and a variety of work experience providers. Skilled staff prepare and support pupils with their transitions into these new learning environments.
