The Chalet School is a small special school, catering for pupils aged 3-11 years, with complex learning difficulties and autism. We use Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped CHildren (TEACCH) and Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and Singalong throughout the school, alongside a focus on sensory integration. We are a purpose built school with 2 sensory rooms, a splash pool, a Life skills room and a large hall for lots of physical activities. Pupils are taught in homogenous groups. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils and need to have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. We are co-located with a mainstream primary school, with which we have good links. We also have good links with Holy Family Primary School. Chalet pupils therefore have significant opportunities for mainstream inclusion, with our support. We have a 1:9 teacher to pupil ratio. We have at least 4 teaching support assistants who support the teacher and each class of 9 pupils, therefore there is a 1:2 pupil ratio in most classes. Children in the EYFS have a higher pupil ratio. Our outdoor provision is excellent, with a wide range of equipment and resources for the children to explore, including a wild area and school garden. Outdoor learning is seen as a very important element of the curriculum.
