The Holmewood School
Main information
Type of service: Day schools, Outreach - education, Schools
The Holmewood School, London (THSL) is an independent school for children aged 7-19 years with average or above average ability with a diagnosis of high functioning autism, Asperger syndrome & other speech, language and communication difficulties. Many children will also have other diagnoses such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, dyslexia or dyspraxia. Children are grouped in chronological age as far as possible but great consideration is given to social communication needs as well as sensory & behavioural compatibility. Classes are small (typically 4-8) and taught by specialist teachers. Full therapy services (including occupational therapy (OT), speech and language therapy (SaLT) & psychotherapy) are available and are an integral part of the school day. We address social skills and life skills via a specialised curriculum. In addition we are a registered Forest School and children typically take part in Forest School activities at Sweet Tree Farm weekly. We currently have volunteers from a variety of background (eg parents, psychology students and OT students). We have staff who are trained & experienced in using the Structure, Positive (approaches and expectations), Empathy, Low arousal, Links (SPELL) framework. We are part of a link with the North London International School so our focus is on inclusion and sharing facilities and access to academic learning opportunities. We develop an Outreach & Inclusion service to support & offer training to other schools and services in the London, Hertfordshire and Essex areas..
