The Milestone School
Main information
Type of service: Day schools, Schools
The school is an area special school that provides for children with moderate learning difficulties (MLD), severe learning difficulties (SLD), physical difficulties, profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) and autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). The Milestone School is organised into 4 departments. The Early Years Base has an assessment centre for children from 2 to 5 years of age and classes for Key Stage 1 (KS1). KS2 is concerned with the primary phase of education, for children between the ages of 8 and 11. KS3 with the early secondary years, for children aged 12 and 14 years. KS4 is upper secondary and provides accredited courses in units for pupils aged 15 and 16 years. Pupils are taught in classes or groups appropriate for their age and ability in order that teaching can be appropriately differentiated. The school offers the full National Curriculum as a basis for curriculum development and adds to this a wide range of additional specialisms and activities (including sensory enrichment and specialist programmes for pupils with ASD). The Milestone School considers it crucial that learning be as independent as possible, and therefore it encourages independent mobility, communication and life skills in all parts of the curriculum. Every child has an Individual Education Plan (IEP), which crosses into each subject area. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. We have 2 advanced skills teachers for ASD and run several ASD structured teaching groups.
