The Springfields Academy

Main information

Type of service: Outreach - education, Residential schools, Schools

The Springfields Academy meets the needs to society's most complex, vulnerable and disaffected students. These additional needs have resulted in multiple permanent exclusions from mainstream, special and independent settings across six local authorities. These needs include fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), severe mental health issues, disorganised attachment disorder, complex communication and emotional difficulties, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyspraxia, tourettes, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and Asperger syndrome. Our 'Extended Services Team' (EST) consisting of counsellors, qualified psychiatric nurse, occupational therapist, art therapist, mentors and speech & language therapist ensure appropriate intervention for the most complex young person. The Academy is weekday boarding, but there is flexibility in this arrangement and a few attend daily. The attendance figures are very high, being over 96% for the last 5 years. Students travel from the Wiltshire, Bristol, Walsall, Dorset, East Sussex and South Gloucester to attend the Academy. High specification on-site vocational training provision complements a range of traditional GCSE and BTEC qualifications, alongside 'The waterland project', 'The greenfields campus' and our latest development 'The extreme classroom'. Volunteers accepted to work with pupils if appropriate. The school uses SPELL framework, parent support advisor & specialist placement officer.
