The Sutton School and Specialist College
Main information
Type of service: Day schools, Schools
The name of the unit for children with special needs is 'The Base'. The additional needs provision caters for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Downs Syndrome and other conditions which require extra support with curriculum areas and social skills. The additional needs provision comprises three members of staff: the Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinator (SENCO) and two support assistants. The pupils will not be based in the provision on a permanent full time basis but will attend core subjects and music and be withdrawn from Modern Foreign languages (MFL) and humanities, or supported within these lessons. The provision staff will operate on a very flexible basis, supervising the pupils at lunchtimes and break times. Individual pupils will be observed in lessons and provision staff will liaise with class teachers as to whether they would benefit from support within the lesson or full withdrawal. If withdrawn from the lesson, the provision staff take the lesson plans and adapt them to the individuals needs and work within the provision. The SENCO will be responsible for producing an Individual Education Plan (IEP) for each of the provision pupils. Close contact with parents will play a major part of the SENCO's role.
