Thomas Bewick School is a specialist local authority provision for children and young people with autism or an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Pupils are aged 3-19 years and come from across Newcastle upon Tyne. The school delivers a broad and balanced curriculum across four departments: Foundation stage, primary, secondary and post 16. The class teams (teachers and teaching and learning assistants) are supported by speech and language and occupational therapists in developing communication skills and physical well-being in order to reduce the pupils' barriers to learning. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. Some of the day pupils access the residential special school part of the school part-time 2 days a week..
