Tor View Specialist Learning Community is on the edge of open countryside in the Rossendale Valley and has facilities. We are a generic learning difficulties mixed day school for 150 pupils in the age range 3-19 years. We are a school within a wide geographical catchment area. The school has a specialist resource for young people with autism and challenging behaviour, the Intensive Support Centre (ISC). We are a Specialist Arts College, a National Support School and a National Teaching School. We have: resourced classrooms; large play areas including a cycle track and age appropriate play structures; a library and meeting room; 2 sensory rooms; An Information and Communication Technology Suite; Specialist teaching rooms for art, design & technology, music, food technology and science; A hydrotherapy pool for Key Stage 1 (KS1) swimming lessons and for water therapy sessions; A separate, purpose-built provision for Further Education (FE) (16-19 years); A separate purpose built autism spectrum condition (ASC) specialist provision for pupils with ASC / severe communication needs; A pond for pond dipping; and A wide range of cutting edge technology. We use a range of approaches and interventions to address the individual needs of out students including: Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication-Handicapped Children (TEACCH); Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS); Makaton; Objects of Reference; True Object Based Icons (TOBIs); Voice Output Communication Aids (VOCAs); Social Stories & Comic Strip Conversations; Intensive Interaction; Jabadao; Sherborne @ Sunfield; and Sensory Integration Therapy. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils.
