Ty Gwyn Special School is an LEA special school in Cardiff. The school caters for pupils aged 3-19 years with 130 pupils on roll. Most pupils at Ty Gwyn have profound and multiple learning difficulties and many are also on the autism spectrum, approximately 88% of pupils access the curriculum at P-Level 6 and below. The school moved into new, purpose built, state of the art premises in 2010. When inspected in 2012 we were judged to be an excellent school with excellent prospects for the future. The school benefits from having extensive nursing and therapy support on site as well as many specialist facilities including: hydropool, sensory room, soft play room, rebound therapy and trampoline facilities. The school embraces a total communication approach and supports pupils to use a wide range of high and low tech communication strategies. Recognising the importance that ICT and assistive technology could play in the lives of our pupils, we opened an Assistive Technology Centre in 2010. The centre works collaboratively with class teams, therapists, specialists and parents to help pupils overcome barriers to learning. The school believes in positive behaviour management and all staff members are trained in Team Teach. Key staff have undertaken further training in many autism specific approaches including Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children (TEACCH) and Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). Volunteers may be accepted.
