West Kirby Residential School is a non-maintained special needs school. Pupils have social, emotional and behavioural difficulties, often caused by medical conditions such as Asperger syndrome. The school aims: to provide a stable, caring and stimulating environment; to offer the widest possible range of education, experience and opportunity; improve community awareness; prepare and support children to reach their potential in National Tests and Examinations and to regularly review and record progress. The school has two sections, junior and senior. There are opportunities for integration into Further Education through links with local colleges. A wide range of activities are available for pupils to take part in. Accommodation is divided into 2 houses in the community and house group with individual bedrooms and communal areas. Each child is assigned a key worker. Maintaining pupil contact with staff is considered vital, as are regular meetings between parents and staff. Medically qualified staff catering for a wide range of medical conditions are available on site, day and night. Children are taught subjects enabling them to reach their potential academically. They learn how to care for themselves and come to terms with their individual conditions. They also learn to understand and respect the needs of others and to help where needed. The community and life outside the school is also a focus for learning. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils.
