Whalsay School

Main information

Type of service: Day schools, Nursery and pre-schools, Schools

Whalsay School caters for pupils aged from 3 to 16 years. It is also a Centre for the Community with facilities that can be used by pupils and all of Whalsay's residents. The name of the bases for children with special needs is the ASN (Additional Support Needs) Resource Base. Co-operative teaching in the classroom, after realistic planning with subject teachers, allows ASN staff to give close support to pupils with learning difficulties. If necessary staff will withdraw certain pupils for individual or small group tuition. These pupils may have specific learning difficulties or moderate learning difficulties. The department uses ICT as an appropriate teaching strategy to motivate pupils and develop basic skills. The school uses the SPELL framework as part of an holistic approach.
