Wings is a residential school for up to 60 young people who have social, emotional and behavioural difficulties which may include autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It is fully approved as a school with the Department for Education (DfE) and as a Children’s Home with Ofsted. Some young people attend only during the usual term time but some stay throughout the year, dependant on their personal situation. Wings places great emphasis on success in school work and public examinations and in recognising achievements of all kinds. All pupils are expected to wear school uniform and take and succeed in a wide range of General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) examinations. The school has a Chartered Educational Psychologist and a Clinical Psychologist who attend on a weekly basis. Young people with ASD are educated in the same groups as others but all staff are trained in supporting them both in school and the residential setting. Assertive discipline is another intervention and approach. All referral enquiries are dealt with through our Principal Donagh McKillop who is able to discuss each young persons needs and assess if we can meet those needs. Interviews and visits from the young person before admission are a vital part of ensuring the young person is happy with the school and home and this means a smooth transition to Wings is achieved. Short breaks are just for their own pupils. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils.
