Woolgrove School, Special Needs Academy
Main information
Type of service: Day schools, Schools
Woolgrove is a day primary school for 110 pupils with moderate learning difficulties (MLD). In addition, it has an Autism Base for 8 pupils. Each child in the base has an Individual Integration Plan (IEP) which is increased until he or she is ready to transfer full-time into one of the school's mainstream classes. There is a policy of returning pupils to mainstream education whenever this becomes appropriate. The school employs specialist teachers for music and physical education (PE). Woolgrove has a well established outreach service offering support to mainstream colleagues in the 90 schools in the catchment area of Letchworth, Hitchin, Baldock, Royston, Stevenage and surrounding villages. The school acquired Beacon Status in September 2001. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. The school uses the Structure, Positive (approaches and expectations), Empathy, Low arousal, Links (SPELL) framework.
