Wren Spinney Community Special School
Main information
Type of service: Day schools, Schools
Wren Spinney offers a designated provision, Woodpeckers, for pupils and the opportunity to be educated in mixed groups throughout the school. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. The volunteers would need to have experience of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or to have expressed genuine interest in ASD and be willing to be involved in in-service training opportunities. The Structure, Positive (approaches and expectations), Empathy, Low arousal, Links (SPELL) framework is in the process of being introduced in the school. Another facility provided by the school is access to the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA). Other interventions, approaches and programmes offered by the school are Team Teach and signalong. We now have a designated Key Stage 3 (KS3) ASD class, Flamingos. Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children (TEACCH) approach is used in both classes. Each class group utilises 2 rooms to carousel, 1 room for 'work', 1 room for 'choose' activities. Students integrate into other classes for part timetable if and where appropriate. Make use of The Shop and The Studio off site facilities if and where appropriate.
