The Autistic Spectrum Disorder Centre enables pupils to achieve their potential in a specialist, inclusive and caring environment. The Centre aims to support pupils to integrate and fully access mainstream school and education, providing the opportunities and support to achieve success. The ASD Centre aims to provide pupils with a calm and safe working and social environment. The use of quiet and sensory areas are an effective resource in helping the pupils cope with the sometimes busy life of secondary school. Staff in the Centre seek to establish flexible routines for each pupil and firmly believe in the use of Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children (TEACCH) strategies and Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). Specific autism spectrum disorder (ASD) teaching strategies are all part of the shared teaching and learning experience in the Centre. The ASD Centre aims to promote awareness of ASDs and enable all pupils and staff within the school to develop an understanding and empathy towards others. The Centre staff also provide individualised teaching strategies and resources for teachers in the mainstream school to help meet the needs of young people with ASD.
