Ysgol Pen Coch Specialist Special Primary School
Main information
Type of service: Day schools, Schools
Service URL: http://moodle.flintshire.gov.uk/pencoch
Pupils with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have their own Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children (TEACCH) stations if needed. In the nursery and foundation phase (FP) they have access to the FP curriculum and use a station if needed. In Key Stage 2 (KS2) all pupils begin the day in classes with their peers and have circle time. Then they move to their groups according to their need so ASD pupils are catered for individually in a TEACCH set up. Those with ASD who do not require this are educated according to their needs with other groups. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils only if they have been Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checked and with appropriate training. The school uses the Structure, Positive (approaches and expectations), Empathy, Low arousal, Links (SPELL) framework. Other interventions, approaches and programmes offered by the school are Wii rooms, incredible years programme, community focus programme, Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), cycling and forest schools.
