Ysgol Plas Brondyffryn is a Regional Residential Special School maintained by Denbighshire Local Education Authority. The school specialises in meeting the needs of children/young people with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) aged 3-19 years. There are currently 124 children/young people on roll. Gerddi Glasfryn - Residential accommodates between 26-30 children/young people on a part-time basis. In addition to Denbighshire children/young people, the school also takes children/young people from across Wales and a small number from England. The majority of the children/young people are from English speaking families. For most children/young people, Welsh is taught as a second language. However, children/young people from Welsh speaking families are able to be educated in Welsh. The majority of the children/young people are boys due to the higher prevalence of autism in males. The school uses a range of ASD specific strategies such as Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children (TEACCH), Structure, Positive (approaches and expectations), Empathy, Low arousal, Links (SPELL) framework, PECS, social stories™ and comic strip conversations™. Through an outreach service the school also offers advice on how to support, manage and teach pupils from Denbighshire Schools who have a diagnosis of ASD. We also accept referrals for those who are exhibiting features of ASD and are undergoing or awaiting assessment.
