We are a mainstream school with 6 special units attached. There are 4 Speech and Language Units and 3 Social and Communication Units, catering for pupils with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The unit can take up to 6 children of the year 1 to year 3 ages and is staffed by one teacher, one classroom assistant and one general assistant. The unit covers all areas of the curriculum but has a strong emphasis on developing the children's social communication skills along with other speech and language problems-eventually enabling the children to gain as much access to the national curriculum as possible. The children have regular outings in order to encourage their social interaction skills in and out of the classroom. As the year progresses the children have an increased level of integration with their peers in the mainstream classes. An Outreach Support service for Speech and Language Therapy is also based at the school. This is a support service for children with Speech and Language difficulties which provides a vital support system for those children who ultimately leave the unit for a new placement.
