Southend Mencap's advocacy service provides a full range of support to people with learning disabilities: advocates may work on a 1:1 basis alongside the client to resolve 'one-off' difficulties; advocates will work for as long as the support is needed if the issues are more complex or long-term; Self-Advocacy groups have been established at the local Adult Training Centres and residential homes in the area. These promote and encourage the self-confidence and ability of members to voice their opinions and make choices, and introduce Peer Advocacy; the service is a focal point for Campaign Advocacy on behalf of larger numbers of people; Advocates have the contacts to liaise with relevant agencies to get things done; advocates follow a code of good practice and will always discuss all information in the strictest confidence. The service can help with issues including your: benefits; day services/access to other service; accommodation; employment; choices e.g. holidays; conflict resolution with families; conflict resolution within the immediate community; understanding money/finance; sexuality and relationships.
