About the training

There have been a number of cases over the years of autistic people being wrongly arrested or approached by the police due to their 'unusual behaviour'.

Difficulties may arise at any stage of communication between the police and someone on the autism spectrum, from the initial approach on the street to the interview process, whether that be as a suspect or as a witness to a crime. The online module will focus on different elements of policing by using case studies, exploring people's experiences in public spaces and offering advice on how to make reasonable adjustments.

The module should take between 40-90 minutes to complete.

Module outcomes

Understand how autism is defined in law, described by autistic people and defined by clinicians. This knowledge will assist you in recognising signs of autism (although in some cases this can be very difficult).
Understand the reasons why some autistic people may become involved in criminality, either as a victim or perpetrator.
Understand why someone on the autism spectrum might be vulnerable in police settings.
Identify ways of supporting an individual on the autism spectrum both in the community and at the police station.
