What to expect
Application process:
Applications to attend this training course will be accepted from 2 November until 8am on 11 November. Applications will then be reviewed by our training consultants from 11 November.
Applicants will receive an email no later than 5pm on 16 November to inform them whether they have been allocated a place on the course or not.
Before the event:
Successful applicants will be sent a welcome pack within the email on 16 November. This pack will include details on the event, how to join and notes on how to prepare for the day.
The day:
This free event involves attendance at one of our public speaking skills training courses running in November 2020:
- 23 November 9.30am-4.30pm
- 24 November 9.30am-4.30pm
The morning of the training will be delivered by autistic speaker Carly Jones, who will explore public speaking skills, lessons learned from experience, anxiety and knowing what information to disclose if material is personal.
The afternoon session will continue this exploratory-style day with the opportunity to hear some hints and tips on PowerPoint use, talking to different audiences and examples from our training team.
You will then be given the opportunity to deliver a short presentation on a topic of your choice – this should be five minutes in length and gives you an opportunity to receive feedback, advice and tips and to practise your public speaking skills in a small group. As part of your preparation, you can choose to prepare a brief PowerPoint to accompany your presentation. You can either share this yourself, or send to our team who will support you during the session with how to share it on screen for your presentation. Successful applicants will be given guidance in their welcome pack on how to do this prior to the event.
You will receive a certificate of attendance by email after the event.
After the event:
After this training course, autistic adults, including those who have attended this course, will have the opportunity to submit an application to share lived experience in the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training in Learning Disability and Autism trial. This will be an application process and no roles are guaranteed.
